My Top 6 Japanese Rom-Com Recommendations!

You could say Japanese manga is synonymous with romantic comedies!
There are so many great ones out there.

Today, I want to introduce some works that I personally find incredibly entertaining!

I’ve relied heavily on translation tools for this, so please be gentle! (laughs)

The Quintessential Quintuplets

This is a well-known and popular series, with an anime adaptation already broadcast.
It’s a romantic comedy featuring five unique quintuplet sisters, and it’s revealed very early on that the protagonist will end up with just one of them!

It’s not just about the sweet, “blush-inducing” romance; the mystery of who he ends up with adds an exciting, puzzle-solving element that makes it highly recommended!

Rent-A-Girlfriend

This is my absolute favorite romantic comedy manga!
First off, the heroines are incredibly cute (which is super important!).

And the main character, while not conventionally cool, has his own kind of coolness.
Even his friends are cool.

The protagonist gets dumped by his girlfriend and, by chance, starts using a rental girlfriend service.
During a date with his rental girlfriend, he gets spotted by a friend and instinctively lies, saying, “She’s my girlfriend.”

From there, things spiral: introductions to his grandmother and various other situations lead him to continue the lie…

The more you read, the more you get drawn in and fall in love with it!
The anime has even been confirmed for a fourth season.

I highly recommend reading the manga!

Japanese

Masamune-kun’s Revenge

This is my second favorite work!
The reason it’s second is simply because it’s already concluded.

That’s how close it is in my personal ranking!
Plus, there was a surprise when a sudden sequel was released after the final volume – it was an absolute shock!

It was a crazy moment, especially since it came out after it had ended…

Let me introduce the story (laughs).

It’s about a boy who was once overweight and bullied, and a girl who used to protect him.
The boy confessed to his kind friend, but she cruelly rejected him, calling him “pig’s foot.”

As a result, that boy dedicated himself to losing weight, and he’s returned as a super handsome high schooler!
His plan? To make the girl who rejected him fall for him, without revealing his identity, and then spectacularly dump her!

It’s a romantic comedy that starts with this revenge plot!
The anime has also aired its second season.

TONIKAWA: Over the Moon for You

The direct translation of the Japanese title is “Anyway, Cute.” And yes, that’s exactly what it is—anyway, cute!

Not only is the girl adorable, but the protagonist is cute too, even the boy! (laughs)

What starts as a normal romantic comedy gradually develops into a somewhat sci-fi-esque romantic comedy.

This series also has an anime adaptation!

Japanese

A Couple of Cuckoos

The protagonist discovers he was a “switched at birth” child with a certain girl.
However, he still considers the parents who raised him for 16 years to be his true parents.

His parents also believe he’s their real son, but they also want to spend time with their biological child as family.
So, the parents decided that the two children should “marry and both become their children.” This leads to a dramatic development involving the two fiancés, the girl the protagonist likes, and even his sister!

Of course, it’s also been adapted into an anime!

Japanese

Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You

You’ll be grinning non-stop with this one.
It’s a romantic comedy where you can also feel a sense of Japanese aesthetic.

It’s a rom-com centered around a young, pure-hearted supermarket cashier and a middle-aged regular customer (the protagonist), brought together by cigarettes.
A gyaru-esque girl invites him to the smoking spot behind the supermarket.

Turns out, she’s the same person as the cashier!
The girl recognizes the regular customer, but the protagonist hasn’t realized it yet (laughs).

And what’s more, that cashier is his favorite staff member at the store!

Only the Japanese version is out right now, but it’s becoming quite popular, so I think it’s only a matter of time before it gets translated!
When a translated version comes out, you should definitely give it a read!

Summary: Get Your Heart Pounding with Japanese Rom-Coms!

I ended up introducing one book that’s currently only available in Japanese, but I’m pretty sure it’ll be translated soon!

Love elements are often included even in battle manga or gag manga.
But in these, they’re the main story. All the works I’ve introduced have a high “heart-pounding” factor!

However, be careful when reading in public, as you’ll definitely be grinning (lol).
